Stair rebuild
Stair rebuild with new treads, risers and a tightened railing. The old stringers had settled; we corrected the rise before finishing.
Interior and exterior stairs — stringers, treads, risers and railings that are level, quiet and code-compliant.
Stairs are carpentry at its least forgiving. A quarter inch out of level at the top becomes a visible gap at the bottom, and a riser height that varies by half an inch is a trip hazard people notice every single day. We build and rebuild stairs by measuring the total rise first and dividing it evenly — not by copying the old stringer, which is usually part of the problem.
Most of the stair work we do in Everett falls into three groups: exterior deck stairs that have rotted at the stringer, interior stairs that creak and have settled, and staircases being opened up during a remodel. For exterior stairs we rebuild with pressure-treated or composite stringers, proper footing and galvanized hardware. For interior we replace treads and risers, add blocking to stop squeaks, and install railings that meet current height and baluster spacing.
If your stairs are being replaced as part of a floor install, we handle the nosing and transitions so the new floor meets the stair cleanly instead of ending in a lump of trim.
Interior and exterior stairs built to the actual rise, with even riser heights.
Pressure-treated or composite exterior stringers, solid blocking and proper hangers.
Oak, engineered wood, vinyl or composite treads, with matching risers and nosing.
Guardrails, handrails and balusters at current code height and spacing.
Blocking, shimming and screw-through repairs to stop movement and noise.
Rotted exterior stringers, posts and landing framing replaced, not patched.
These are ballpark ranges for the Everett area, not a quote. Every project gets a written, itemized estimate after a free walkthrough — the number you see there is the number you pay unless the scope changes.
| Exterior deck stairs, 6–8 steps | $2,000 – $5,000 |
| Interior stair rebuild, treads and risers | $2,500 – $6,500 |
| Railing replacement | $1,200 – $3,500 |
| Squeak and settlement repair | $400 – $1,500 |
| Stair nosing with new floor | $45 – $110 per step |
Any number. We regularly rebuild full flights, including landings, and we can phase work so you keep a usable path through the house.
Structural changes, new staircases and railing changes usually do. Replacing treads and risers in kind often does not. We check with the city before starting.
Residential guards are typically 36 inches high with balusters spaced so a 4-inch sphere cannot pass. Handrails on stairs are 34 to 38 inches. We build to current code, not to what was there.
Usually. We can source matching oak or engineered treads, or refinish existing ones if the structure is sound.
